New Licensing Requirements

As of December 14, 2016, the Board is requiring applicants for an Ophthalmic Dispenser License to pass the ABO and NCLE Advanced and Practical Exams and a Nevada Law and Ethics Exam.  Applicants will no longer be required to take a board-administered licensing exam in Las Vegas.

    ABO/NCLE Registration Information

    The American Board of Opticianry is now registering candidates for the February ABO and NCLE Advanced and Practical Exams . Registration for the Advanced Exams can be completed online and registration for the Practical Exams can be completed by phone at (703) 719-5800 or toll free 1 (800) 296-1379.

      You may require special approval to register for the Advanced Exams. Complete and submit an Application for an Ophthalmic Dispenser License or Special Application (for out-of-state applicants) and the Board will notify the ABO of your qualification to register. The registration deadline for the February exams is January 19, 2016. If you are unable to submit your complete application by January 10, 2016 but would like to register for the February exams, please email the Board at: Info@nvopticians.org.

        If you have already passed the ABO and NCLE Advanced and Practical Exams, submit documentation with your application and the Board will mail you the Nevada Law and Ethics Exam. The Law and Ethics exam is an open-book exam which must be completed by hand and returned to the Board office by mail before your license will be issued. The exam covers the rules and regulations encompassed in Chapters 637 of the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
